About the Film:

“Powerful and evocative.”
–Daryl Chin, Documents on Art & Cinema

575 Castro St. reveals the play of light and shadow upon the walls of the Castro Camera Store set for Gus Van Sant’s film Milk. These mundane shots are almost bereft of movement and sound. So quiet, so still. All the better to showcase the range of emotions evoked by Harvey Milk’s words on the soundtrack. The audio track is an edited down version of the 13-minute audio-cassette that Harvey Milk recorded in his camera shop on the evening of Friday, November 18, 1977 (a few weeks after his election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors which made him one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States). Labeled simply: "In-Case" the tape was to be played, "in the event of my death by assassination." The sensibility of 575 Castro St. hearkens back to the dozens of Super 8 gay short films of the '70s that passed through Harvey Milk’s hands to be processed and developed. The film was commissioned by FilmInFocus.com to be showcased online in conjunction with the theatrical release of Milk.

WE ARE THE MODS

About the Film:

Sadie’s art is her photography. Nico’s art is her life. Together they explore Britain’s 60’s mod culture of music, fashion, drugs and vintage scooters in contemporary Los Angeles. Sadie observes the world through the lens of her 35 mm camera, but everything changes when she meets Nico, the new “mod” girl who was born with Milroy’s disease that causes her to have abnormal swelling in her foot. Nico doesn’t hide her disability, in fact she loves the spotlight. Sadie is drawn into Nico’s thrilling world of aesthetics where Sadie learns about herself and who she really is.

New American Vision’s Goals for 2009

We’re now in our fourth year and all the various parts of our business and mission are coming together! Our Goals for 2009 arrive just in time to weather the challenging metamorphoses that the industry is undergoing. They include:

  • Continuing to drive audiences to indie film working by closely with NON-PROFIT and GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS and our ongoing festival Community Outreach programs.
  • Striving to bring revenues to filmmakers and film festivals through FEST SELECTS initiatives and aggregated sponsorship affiliate programs tied to ancillary revenues.
  • Eagerly eliminating unnecessary middle-men in the LICENSING and DISTRIBUTION of independent cinema to bring filmmakers as close to the direct revenue source as possible without punishing fees.
  • Helping independent/art cinema find its audience and grow that audience via grass roots marketing and a more coordinated niche/segment marketing for aggregated content for VOD, EST, DTO, mobile/wireless and all other avenues for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION.

ORLY’S LAST WORD

On a slightly different topic, I want to apologize for not sending Part III of the Energy Crisis Newsletter before the election as promised. Parts I & II can still be found on our website, as can our Digital Distribution Guide. I promise to follow through on the latest issue of the Energy Crisis Newsletter, but in the meantime, in regard to another crisis—the Economic Crisis—while I intended to send a summary of some of the information I have been gathering from both sides of the political party spectrum, in the midst of film fest frenzy and spending way too much time on Facebook, this too has eluded me! However, as a way of tiding over those who are interested, I would recommend going here for a great overview of the factors that have lead us to the current crisis we are in. —O/R
